We know you’ve got some beautiful, funny, touching images of your time on the trails to share and we are excited about seeing them! Horse Council BC has invited 3 guest judges with backgrounds in both horses and photography – Andrea Blair – Janice Reiter, Sally Rees and Kevan Garecki – to make the tough decisions and we’re offering great Garmin eTrex 10 GPS receivers as prizes. This contest is about enjoying BC’s trails, so all images submitted need to have been taken in BC. Each category will have one winner only, so send your very best, and good luck!
At Horse Council BC, we work to support and advocate for your right to ride the trails available to us in beautiful British Columbia. Thank you for helping to further our mission through your photography!

Categories and Judges:
On The trail – Judge: Andrea Blair, our judge for the On The Trail category, is currently in the Cariboo and engaged in dealing firsthand with the wildfire crisis facing that region. Respecting that, we have asked Janice Reiter of Janice Reiter Photography to step in for Andrea. We’re grateful that Janice is willing to bring her eye and expertise to the contest.
Born every inch a city kid, Janice grew up in Vancouver, BC. She readily admits to driving her parents crazy with one incessant wish – to have a horse. At 17, when an opportunity to have a horse presented itself, like manna from heaven, she grabbed both reins and refused to look back.
Moving out to Langley, with a new husband and a dowry of five horses, Janice took up the challenge of breeding Appaloosas. Her trails traversed the Pacific Northwest for the next twenty years; during that time she was fortunate to have campaigned some pretty special halter and pleasure horses. But times change, and Janice left riding around in circles behind, and she has since embarked on a new adventure, one that’s taken her into a world she had only ever dreamed of – cutting horses – and her traveling companion is a homegrown Appaloosa. Funny how life goes…
Camping With Your Horse – Judge: Sally Rees
Sally has loved taking photographs since she first picked up a camera. She had many good years travelling with her old Minolta and Nikon film cameras and spent considerable time in the darkroom during her Art and Photography teaching career. Sally now shoots with Nikon digital cameras and she’s come to appreciate what quality digital cameras and software can bring to the photographic image.
Sally says every good day begins with a trip to the barn. When she’s not taking photos she spends her time with her dog and her horses, everything from trail riding to showing in the cutting and reining pen.
Wildlife Encounters – Judge: Kevan Garecki
Kevan Garecki began his photographic endeavours as a child when his grandfather gifted him with an old twin-lens reflex camera, and he has continued to build on his technical knowledge and artistic prowess ever since. His work has enjoyed exposure in numerous publications and several galleries across Canada, and is featured in many private collections. He has done commissioned work for the government of the Northwest Territories, the former premier of BC, William Bennett Jr. in addition to numerous equine breeders across North America. He continues to offer his skills from his home base in Abbotsford, BC by contract shoots and offering various photography workshops throughout western Canada. Kevan is also prominently active in horse rescue and rehabilitation, and donates the majority of the proceeds from his photography to registered equine charities.
Canada’s 150th Trail Celebrations – Judge: HCBC Staff
Hey, we know fun when we see it! We can’t wait to see your celebration pics. Just make sure everyone in the shot is okay with you entering their image in the contest.
