NEWS RELEASE – BACK COUNTRY HORSEMEN OF BC (BCHBC)
150 RIDE FOR CANADA’S BIRTHDAY!
A BCHBC horse and rider contingent is continuing its ride from Greater Victoria’s Shawnigan Lake starting point to culminate on Canada Day at the Memekay Horse Camp in the Sayward Valley.
The 150 Project began in 2014 with the idea of riding up the island in stages each summer starting from the Victoria area. Stage 1 was from Shawnigan Lake to Nanaimo, then on to Qualicum the next year and last year ending at Merville. 2017 marks the fourth leg and this five day ride was planned in conjunction with Canada’s 150th birthday.
Brian Wallace – President of BCHBC stated “We are celebrating the 150th birthday of Canada this year and this ride is one of many across the country celebrating the pivotal role of the horse in opening up our country connecting the east to west one hoof in front of the other. As president of BCHBC I commend the chapters involved with this project for their vision, their many hours of work, and the tenacity to see it through to completion.
A group of about 15 riders will depart Merville on June 26th and ride/camp their way north. They will arrive Friday, June 30th at the Memekay Horse Camp near Sayward. On July 1st they will celebrate with good food, friends and supporters. There are many to thank especially the private property owners from farmers, forestry companies, BC Hydro, Rec Sites and Trails BC who allowed access.
Happy 150th Canada!
